Preparation for Independence

Preparation for Independence is a program aimed at providing life skills to youth in care of Peel Children’s Aid. Preparing to live independently is a huge stress for any teenager. And unfortunately for teens in care, it’s an even greater one. While most teenagers are able to remain at home or receive emotional and financial aid as they learn to live on their own, many teens in care are without a proper family support system and have no choice but to try to make it on their own. Youth in care are also at greater risk for experiencing emotional, physical and sometimes psychological issues, making it even harder to get ahead. Preparation for Independence works with teens in care to ensure their transition into adulthood is as smooth as possible. This intensive program provides formal education and mentoring in such topics as money management, education strategies and career planning and basic life skills, ranging from learning to find a safe home to planning meals.
