Back to School with Confidence

Back to School with ConfidenceImagine the first day of school as a young student, without the basic school supplies and lacking the confidence one needs to reach their full potential. This is the reality for more than 500 children and youth under the care or supervision of Peel Children’s Aid.  While many of their peers anticipate the start to the school year, the new school supplies, outfits and backpacks, these children dread standing out amongst their classmates.

For those children living in poverty the first day of school is often filled with anxiety.  Their families may have struggled – not always successfully – to provide clothing and food for school, and many are unable to afford the high cost of school supplies. How terrible it must be to feel “different” on the very first day, on top of the regular anxiety about fitting in, finding friends and meeting new teachers. In recent years, Peel Region’s child poverty-rate has been growing faster than anywhere else in the GTA. At Peel Children’s Aid Foundation we see no decrease in poverty related needs for children and youth, as requests for school supplies are already pouring in.

Recognizing Excellence in our Donors and Youth

Recognizing Excellence in our Donors and YouthIt was an evening of inspiration and celebration as our donors and bursary winners came together to be recognized. Hosted at the beautiful Mississauga Convention Centre, donors were recognized for reaching milestones in giving, and bursary winners were announced and given their awards.

One by one, our youth came to the stage unfolding their personal stories about past struggles, successes and future goals. In total, forty-two youth received bursaries furthering education at university, college or trade school.  Youth had the opportunity to meet the donor of their bursary and thank them personally for the difference they are making in their lives.
